About Adrian

A nationally recognized, cross-discipline leadership expert, organizational executive, and cultural architect.

Adrian Schoonmaker began leading in faith-based and non-profit environments in his early 20s. For more than two decades, he has been leading staff and volunteers in universities, NGOs, churches and ministries—even the broadcast journalism newsroom.

Currently, as Vice President of Universities at Christian Union (CU), Adrian serves on the executive team of one of the nation’s most dynamic leadership development ministries. With headquarters at Princeton University, CU is focused on developing Christian leaders at the leading universities in America, and in select cities, because of their extraordinary influence on culture and society. CU currently works with students at: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard College, Harvard Law School, Penn, Princeton, Stanford, and Yale.

In his 10 years prior to CU, Adrian served as Executive Pastor of Grace Community Church (Orange County, NY), one of the Northeast’s most exciting ministry scenes—leading the staff and pastoral teams across nine locations to serve thousands of worshipers in the Hudson Valley, 50 miles north of New York City. Grace was named repeatedly among America’s fastest-growing churches, and one of the “Top 400” most influential churches in the United States.

Adrian majored in Pastoral Ministry during undergrad, then earned two master’s degrees (M.A., Journalism and M.A., Practical Theology), and soon graduates with a doctorate in “Leadership & Ministry Management” from Trinity (“TEDS”) in Chicago. His dissertation focuses on models of spiritual leadership development among West Point cadets.

WHERE I’VE INVESTED MY TIME

U.S. Military Academy
at West Point
(Hudson Valley, NY)

For more than 20 years, my wife and I have poured our heart into college students. Many nights of the year, you can find our home spilling over with young adults, seeking life direction, counsel and guidance as they navigate their university years.

During the last decade, these young people have been West Point cadets. I have taught on the campus at more than 100 ministry and leadership gatherings. I’ve trained many officers and cadets in principles of leadership and peer coaching.

It’s been a great gift to work with leaders all the way from the superintendent’s and dean’s offices, across the faculty, and into the barracks. What a privilege to see them multiplying their influence in Berlin, Seoul, Paris, Skopje, Tokyo, and many other international cities.

Grace Community
(New York City Metro)

Pass through Times Square, head north toward the Bronx, cross the Hudson River, and keep going another 50 miles. There you’ll find Grace Community. A church? Yes. But more than that, Grace is a movement.

My heart was captured 10 years ago when I first stepped foot into Grace. Authentic, broken, passionate and raw. Those were the people I met. I fell in love with them, and I like to think they fell in love with me.

I joined the team, and before I knew it, I was “chief of staff.” During the journey, we were all swept up into a wave exponential growth: Giving increased from $1.3M to a budget of $6.7M. Attendance grew from 1,200 to 3,400. Locations multiplied from one building to nine campuses. Staff expanded from 7.5 FTEs to 65 staff members; and the pastoral team from four pastors to 17 pastors.

Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
(Chicago, IL)

I spent four years west of Philadelphia earning my bachelor’s degree. Then it was on to grad school in Virginia Beach, completing two master’s degrees (M.A., Journalism and M.A., Practical Theology).

Moving on to the doctoral level, I completed the coursework for two doctorates, one in “Leadership and Renewal” and the other in “Leadership and Ministry Management.” I am currently nine months from eligibility to graduate from Trinity (“TEDS”) in Chicago.

My research and dissertation focuses on the spiritual leadership development of West Point cadets. I am fascinated with the experience of officers and cadets from the world’s most esteemed leadership institution, as they juxtapose their formation from West Point’s expertise with their shaping through the leadership principles of Jesus Christ.

Slingshot Group
(Los Angeles, CA)

I was first a client of the Slingshot Group, as we hired them several times to help our church with staffing solutions. I got to know the team, based out of the Los Angeles area, and discovered a very attractive culture.

I was so drawn to Slingshot’s relational approach to clients, that I asked if I might join the “family.” It wasn’t long before I was part of the senior leadership team in 2018, working shoulder to shoulder with some of the finest ministry leaders all over the nation.

While I enjoy assisting churches with staffing needs, my favorite part of the work is coaching high-caliber executives and pastors. The first chair is usually a lonely place, and it’s a gift to come alongside as a companion.

J.D. Klote & Associates
(Washington, DC)

While I had directed significant fund raising efforts before, I never did so as my full-time career. Not until 2008.

When I was hired by Klote, I didn’t realize I was entering America’s oldest and most pioneering philanthropic engine. Formerly known as WD&R, this was the firm that helped launch organizations like the YMCA and the American Red Cross.

I was trained well, and became a trainer for many. In what felt like “baptism by fire,” I began coaching and equipping hundreds of leaders and clients in cities across the mid-Atlantic, teaching them principles of stewardship and strategic planning.

Since then, I have personally led fund raising of more than $50 million for non-profit and faith-based projects.
